Types of Fraud
Phishing
Criminals use fraudulent emails (known as phishes) or pop-up Web Pages that appear legitimate and are designed to deceive you into sharing personal or account information. The phishes often include logos of legitimate companies, specific content from their website and many times they will even use employees names.Scammers often randomly generate email addresses - that's why you may have received fraudulent emails that appear to be from financial institutions you do not have an account with. They may also obtain email addresses online from websites, chat rooms, online auctions, and other sources.
Pharming
Pharming occurs when you type in a web address and it redirects you to a fraudulent web site without your knowledge or consent. The web site will try and look similar to the legitimate website to try and capture your personal information.Credit Card Fraud
Credit Card fraud can occur when someone takes your card and uses it without your consent.Phone Solicitations
Scammers will attempt to randomly call people with hopes to lure them with cash gifts or prizes in exchange for personal or account information.Print Fraud
Scammers will use newspapers publishing advertisements with special rates and offers. If customers call, they are asked for their personal information and for an advance payment before the transaction can be completed.Check Scams
Scammers will overpay for an item purchased and ask the difference to be wired back. Often the check was counterfeit or forged for a higher amount.Mail Fraud
This occurs when scammers illegally take your mail or when you receive unrealistic offers. Scammers often use the Sweepstakes and Lottery method. Please beware of lottery scams - especially those that originate from foreign countries. Letters notifying you that you've won a lottery or sweepstakes may require you to send money to secure your winnings. These "official" notices sometime even include fake checks. You'll Never Catch Us Phishing
We'll never send you a letter, e-mail or call you asking for your account numbers, usernames, passwords, PINs or Social Security number. If you get a message like that - called phishing - don't bite.Unity One CU Privacy and Online Security
Protecting the privacy and security of your personal information is one of our top priorities. - Privacy PolicyInternet Fraud Information
The Internet offers a global marketplace for consumers and businesses. However, crooks also recognize the unlimited potential of cyberspace. The same scams that have been previously conducted by mail and phone can now be found on the Internet in email, and new cyber scams emerge everyday. If you feel that you have received a fraudulent e-mail from NCUA, please forward the entire email message to Phishing@ncua.gov.
Additionally, you can file formal complaints concerning any suspected fraudulent email with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) at www.ic3.gov. The IFCC is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center.
Another good resource is the LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com website developed by a joint federal law enforcement and industry task force. The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have provided funding for the site. Key partners include the National White Collar Crime Center, Monster.com, Target and Merchants Risk Council.
